November 30, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm CST

Log & Order – Enforcing tree preservation ordinances

In some municipal justice systems, tree-based offenses are considered especially egregious. In The City of Park Ridge, Illinois, the dedicated Conservators of the Peace who investigate these violations are members of an elite squad called the Forestry Division. During this presentation, we will discuss the City’s Tree Preservation Ordinance through specific case examples to understand how and why enforcement of tree preservation ordinances is an important component to the management of the urban forest.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn examples of the types of evidence necessary to adjudicate an offense.
  2. Ordinances may be written in black and white, but like all infractions of law, all outcomes are not equal. Learn how to find balance.
  3. Tree preservation ordinance administration takes up a lot of resources – time. Learn how to best manage your resources to get the best outcome.
