How do we create accessible sidewalks while preserving and expanding the urban tree canopy?
Building on our conversation that started at the September UCFS Learning Series webinar, Sidewalks Vs. Trees, this interactive 90-minute workshop moves beyond the challenges to focus on practical, real-world solutions.
In the Canopy & Concrete: Collaborative Solutions for Tree Preservation, Sidewalks, and Accessibility Workshop we will briefly explore United States accessibility guidelines and its implications for preserving street tree canopy. The majority of the workshop will be dedicated to small breakout groups, moderated by urban forestry experts. These peer-led discussion groups are your opportunity to ask questions, explore your real-world challenges, and exchange ideas with colleagues facing similar issues.
Breakout groups will explore creative approaches for managing tree and sidewalk conflicts, including:
- Preserving mature trees during sidewalk construction and repair.
- Designing accessible streetscapes that support healthy tree growth.
- Coordinating tree and sidewalk work and cross-departmental collaborations.
- Communicating with urban forestry stakeholders and building partnerships.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify creative sidewalk repair approaches that address accessibility needs while preserving existing trees.
