SUMMARY:Learning Series: Using Evidence to Prove Tree-Related Infractions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series webinar! \nWhat happens when a tree is removed or appears to have been harmed illegally in your urban forest? Would you know what steps to take? In this UCFS Learning Series webinar will explore different issues related to collecting and presenting evidence to prove cases of illegal tree removal. Concepts such as burdens of proof\, types of evidence\, and the burden of persuasion will be examined through the lens of Washington\, D.C.’s “Tree Poisoning Cases\,” a case study in which arborists from the District of Columbia’s Urban Forestry Division investigated the mysterious deaths of four trees in the winter and spring of 2022. \nYou will learn how to: \n\nDescribe different burdens of proof and know which one generally applies to a tree-related enforcement action.\nDescribe the difference between circumstantial evidence and direct evidence and understand how to build a case with either kind.\nDescribe the trier-of-fact and know which one you are more likely to encounter in a tree-related enforcement action.\n\nISA CEUs have been applied for and are pending. \nClick here to register today!

SUMMARY:UCFS Learning Series: Certification 101 – (No\, not those certifications) SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series! \nYou may have heard about the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s (SFI) new Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard over the past couple of years\, but who is going to be the first city or town to get certified? Which university or corporation? And\, what does it REALLY take to get certified….like\, what are the real\, actual steps? Join us to learn from Paul Johnson\, Vice President\, Urban and Community Forestry and Career Pathways at SFI\, for this opportunity to dive into how to utilize the SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard to evaluate and improve your urban forest and program. In addition\, we will talk about the nuts and bolts of getting Certified to the full standard or the four theme options. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDetailed information about what it takes to get third-party certified and how to selection a Certification Body.\nWhat will your urban forestry program be required to report on and how do you prepare for the audit.\nAfter certification\, what will you do with the certification and how do you keep it up?\n\nOne (1) ISA CEU has been approved for this webinar. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:UCFS Learning Series: The Pivotal Role of Municipal Urban Wood Recycling Systems
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series! \nIn this UCFS Learning Series\, we’ll learn from Urban Ashes founder and CEO\, Paul Hickman\, alongside municipal foresters Kendra Boot of Fort Collins\, Colorado\, and Tiffany Giacobazzi of Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, as they detail the critical role of Municipal Urban Wood Recycling Systems in mitigating carbon loss\, CO2e emissions\, and combating climate change. This informative session will delve into how Urban Ashes\, through its innovative CUT Model\, and the collaborative efforts of the Urban Wood Network members\, are actively addressing these environmental challenges. You’ll hear firsthand experiences and insights from urban foresters Kendra and Tiffany as they share their experiences implementing Urban Wood Recycling Systems and explore the challenges faced and successes achieved in these communities\, providing valuable lessons for other municipalities. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nThis webinar will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of urban wood waste.\nParticipants will gain insights into how Urban Ashes’ CUT Model\, along with the Urban Wood Network\, offer actionable tools for addressing carbon loss\, CO2e emissions\, and climate change within municipal urban wood recycling systems.\nParticipants will learn about the collaborative solutions embraced by Urban Ashes and Urban Wood Network’s role by connecting stakeholders to promote sustainable urban wood.\n\nISA CEUs have been applied for and are pending. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:UCFS Learning Series: The Citizen's Coolkit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the UCFS Learning Series! \nThe Citizen’s Coolkit: New tools\, processes\, and career pathways for engaging communities in greening/tree-planting on private land \nMany communities in North America have yet to develop resilient neighbourhoods that meet canopy and climate targets. This learning session introduces a novel process for implementing local nature-based climate solutions\, using the powerful Citizen’s Coolkit to motivate collective grassroots action on private land that is difficult for municipalities to influence and regulate. \nThe Coolkit program seeks to activate micro-neighbourhoods where residents care the most and can take practical collective action on tree planting and stewardship\, in alignment with local policies and staff. The Coolkit is an attractive\, customizable DIY resource which provides fun ‘hands-on’ activities and low-barrier visual learning tools to build capacity and guide local climate action. It follows a simple five-step process\, which includes structured neighbourhood walks\, mapping local vulnerabilities & assets\, collective visioning of climate solutions on your block\, leading to practical local climate action plans. The webinar will explain how a series of workshops empowers residents to become local climate champions\, with municipal support\, for positive action such as tree planting\, rewilding and stewarding boulevards\, food forests\, raingardens etc. \nEvaluation results will be shared from testing of this process in diverse neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver and other Canadian communities\, where it has been well received by residents of many cultures and all age groups\, including disadvantaged communities in low-canopy neighbourhoods. \nThe webinar discusses how such programs can be scaled and customized by other municipalities to help meet high-level targets on the ground and implemented through new professional development opportunities such as a train-the-trainer Micro-certificate in Climate Action and Community Engagement and online degree programs such as UBC’s Master of Urban Forestry Leadership. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn new tools for engaging local communities on private land tree-planting and stewardship\nExplore replicable processes & best practices for empowering collective climate action at neighbourhood scale\nLearn about new training pathways for building confidence\, capacity\, and credentials in engaging your community\n\nSpeakers for this event are: \n\nDr. Stephen R.J Sheppard\, Emeritus Professor\, UBC Faculty of Forestry & Director of the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP)\nDr. Sara Barron\, Program Director for Masters of Urban Forestry Leadership and Bachelor of Urban Forestry\, UBC.\nElisa Kwun\, Graduate Student and MUFL Coordinator\, UBC\n\nISA CEUs have been applied for and are pending. \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:UCFS Learning Series: Log & Order - Enforcing tree preservation ordinances
DESCRIPTION:Log & Order – Enforcing tree preservation ordinances\nIn some municipal justice systems\, tree-based offenses are considered especially egregious. In The City of Park Ridge\, Illinois\, the dedicated Conservators of the Peace who investigate these violations are members of an elite squad called the Forestry Division. During this presentation\, we will discuss the City’s Tree Preservation Ordinance through specific case examples to understand how and why enforcement of tree preservation ordinances is an important component to the management of the urban forest. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn examples of the types of evidence necessary to adjudicate an offense.\nOrdinances may be written in black and white\, but like all infractions of law\, all outcomes are not equal. Learn how to find balance.\nTree preservation ordinance administration takes up a lot of resources – time. Learn how to best manage your resources to get the best outcome.\n\nThis webinar is approved for one (1) ISA CEU. \nRegister today!
