SUMMARY:Urban Forest Strike Team: Supporting Communities through Storm Recovery
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series webinar!\n\nAcross the nation\, urban and community foresters are grappling with the devastating impacts of natural disasters and the aftermath of recovery. Additionally\, many of our most underserved communities lack the expertise and resources needed to assess and manage storm-damaged trees—essential elements for a healthy and resilient community. \nThe Illinois Urban Forest Strike Team (UFST) was born from the need to address this challenge. A collaborative effort between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program and the USDA Forest Service\, UFST was created following a series of devastating hurricanes in 2007. Its mission is to assist communities by enhancing public safety\, accelerating recovery\, minimizing urban tree canopy loss\, and helping document disaster recovery needs for potential FEMA reimbursement. \nThis initiative trains\, recruits\, and deploys certified Urban Foresters and Arborists to assess storm-damaged trees using industry-leading arboriculture and FEMA standards. By deploying skilled arborists and passionate volunteers\, the team plays a pivotal role in sustainable disaster recovery. They use advanced tree risk assessment protocols and GIS technology to inventory publicly owned trees—identifying those that need mitigation while preserving those that can thrive. These efforts help communities recover faster\, fostering stronger\, more resilient urban ecosystems. \nMore than just rebuilding\, the Strike Team’s work nurtures the long-term health of our environment\, strengthens social bonds\, and contributes to the fight against climate change. Join this Learning Series session to learn how to launch this powerful initiative in your own community. Together\, we can restore valuable community trees\, enhance public health\, and create thriving\, resilient communities in the face of future challenges. Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of this exciting\, mission-driven movement! \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nBuild the foundational elements of establishing an volunteer Strike Team.\nConduct and manage volunteer lead rapid tree risk assessments to support post-storm recovery efforts.\nLead an Urban Forest Strike Team initiative in your own community\, building local resilience and protecting urban and community trees.\n\nISA CEUs will be applied for. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Clearing the Backlog: Managing the Growing Demand for Municipal Tree Services
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series! \nUrban foresters across the United States and Canada face an ever-growing workload and demand for critical tree maintenance services involving the removal of pruning\, removals\, and stumping. This increase is driven by greater public awareness\, extreme weather\, climate change\, invasive species\, development pressures\, and growing or aging urban forests. These challenges highlight the critical need for operational excellence in urban forest management\, especially given the constraints of finite resources and competing priorities. \nThe City of Mississauga\, Canada’s seventh-largest city\, has risen to this challenge with notable success. Within just six months\, Mississauga cleared a two-year stumping backlog and launched an ambitious plan to clear the work order backlog and build capacity. Their strategy includes an innovative new tree maintenance contract\, implementing a proactive tree maintenance program\, streamlining workflows and processes\, and improving customer experience using technology. \nJoin us for this insightful webinar as we explore the opportunities\, challenges\, tactics\, and tools for managing the growing demand for municipal tree services. Learn from Mississauga’s experience and strategies to improve service delivery\, enhance operational efficiency\, and leverage technology in urban forest management. This session is a must for urban forestry professionals seeking to elevate their practices and achieve excellence in managing urban forests. \nLearning Objectives: \nAt the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the growing demand for municipal tree services and key drivers\, including the existing conditions\, and constraints in administering maintenance programs.\nIdentify best practices for operational excellence in urban forest management\, focusing on efficiency and effectiveness.\nImplement technology to streamline workflows\, enhance data management\, and improve customer experience.\n\nApproved for one ISA CEU. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Is Your Tree Protection Ordinance Constitutional?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the UCFS Learning Series! \nIn modern times\, tree protection laws and ordinances of all different kinds are found in many jurisdictions. But if a law or ordinance conflicts with the fundamental rules of a state or federal constitution\, then the law is invalid to the extent of conflict. This presentation discusses a sampling of the constitutional challenges that have tested various tree protection laws in the U.S. courts\, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Topics include takings\, substantive and procedural due process\, equal protection\, excessive fines\, search and seizure\, and even freedom of speech rights. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify eight different arguments challenging the constitutionality of a tree ordinance and why each was successful or unsuccessful\nExplain the difference between a constitutional and unconstitutional exaction\nExplain the level of deference courts give a municipality’s ordinance under a “police power” challenge\n\nApproved for one ISA CEU. \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Trees First. Wood Next: Realizing the Highest and Best Use for Urban Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series webinar! \nAlong with providing beauty and environmental benefits for the 80% of Americans who live in urban areas\, urban and community forests provide a habitat for wildlife and\, arguably\, even greater ecological benefits as trees reach end of life.  When trees in the urban forest are removed for reasons other than harvest\, their “urban wood” can be captured and incorporated back into the built environment\, completing this virtuous circle. \nOpportunities to maximize utilization of urban and community trees are scalable and can be found in almost all communities. Changing attitudes and practices to maximize utilization of urban forest products can develop a supply of raw material that can feed both established and newly created markets. \nJoin us to learn about the successful solid wood waste program developed by Milwaukee Forestry Services and discuss their strategies\, practices\, and partnerships that have reduced operation and disposal costs while building community awareness and connection to the essential qualities of urban and community forests and their resources. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the elements necessary to establish and implement sustainable urban forestry management practices that capture the full worth of urban and community trees.\nEngage with the Urban Wood Network\, Inc. to raise awareness of the benefits of urban forest products.\nDevelop multi-sector partnerships that maximize the benefits of urban and community forests.\n\nISA CEUs applied for and pending. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Implementing Safety Differently for City Foresters Overseeing Tree and Vegetation Management Crews
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the UCFS Learning Series co-hosted with the Utility Arborist Association! \nIn the evolving landscape of safety practices\, the concepts of Safety I and Safety II have existed to analyze work activity and keep workers safe. The shift from traditional Safety I approaches to the contemporary Safety II\, often referred to as Safety Differently\, has been profound. Safety I’s reactive approach often places blame on employees\, assuming errors or intentional violations as the root cause. This overlooks the actual dynamics of work in the field. Safety II seeks to understand how work truly happens. It shifts the focus from preventing incidents to ensuring positive outcomes\, utilizing workers’ knowledge and experience. \nIn this webinar\, urban and community foresters will learn how they can support their tree and vegetation management crews for: \n\nTraining: Foresters can implement and support Safety II training programs that focus on building capacity\, problem-solving skills\, and adaptability by engaging crews in interactive training to ensure that workers are prepared for the dynamic nature of fieldwork.\nMindset: City Foresters can foster a culture where workers feel safe to share their insights and experiences to encourage an understating of the real-world challenges crews face and promote a collaborative approach to safety.\nDaily Operations: In daily operations\, foresters should focus on building capacity and resilience within the crews. Recognizing the expertise of the crews and involving them in safety planning can lead to more effective and practical safety measures.\nIncident Review: Safety II transforms incident reviews from blame-finding missions to learning opportunities. This approach looks at the system as a whole rather than isolating individual errors\, fostering a deeper understanding of the underlying factors.\nContinuous Improvement: By adopting a Safety II approach\, City Foresters can create a proactive and forward-looking safety culture that regularly reviews safety practices\, learns from near-misses\, and continuously adapts to new challenges.\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the Evolution of Safety Practices. Comprehend the fundamental differences between Safety I and Safety II approaches.\nLearn the core concepts of Safety II\, including Human Performance Improvement (HPI) and Human and Organizational Improvement (HOP). Appreciate the shift from preventing incidents to ensuring positive outcomes by leveraging workers’ knowledge and experience.\nRecognize the pivotal role of workers in maintaining safety within a complex and dynamic environment. Appreciate the importance of understanding the context in which employees operate to improve safety practices.\n\nISA CEUs applied for and pending. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Florida’s Laws are Not Always Sunny: Lessons learned on state vs. city tree policy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series webinar! \nEvery day\, laws are passed all over the world that impact local municipalities. When Florida lawmakers passed Florida Statute 163.045 it created waves across the urban forestry community. Passed in 2021\, this statute brought unforeseen challenges to the tree care industry\, reshaping both its practices and ethical considerations. As originally written\, the law stated: \n“A local government may not require a notice\, application\, approval\, permit\, fee\, or mitigation for the pruning\, trimming\, or removal of a tree on residential property if the owner obtains documentation from an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or a Florida licensed landscape architect that the tree presents a danger to persons or property.” \nIn this webinar we will to take an in depth look at how vague laws can lead to unforeseen outcomes and impacts on the urban canopy. From navigating regulatory compliance to grappling with ethical dilemmas\, we’ll explore the multifaceted impact of how state policy has impacted local municipalities and other tree care professionals in Florida. \nAt the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n1. Describe and explain the unintended and negative impacts of state laws on local municipalities.\n2. Identify and explain how laws can be improved with industry input.\n3. Describe various ethical dilemmas experienced by arborists once laws go into effect. \nThis webinar is approved for one ISA CEU. \n  \nClick here to register today!

SUMMARY:UCFS Learning Series: The Citizen's Coolkit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the UCFS Learning Series! \nThe Citizen’s Coolkit: New tools\, processes\, and career pathways for engaging communities in greening/tree-planting on private land \nMany communities in North America have yet to develop resilient neighbourhoods that meet canopy and climate targets. This learning session introduces a novel process for implementing local nature-based climate solutions\, using the powerful Citizen’s Coolkit to motivate collective grassroots action on private land that is difficult for municipalities to influence and regulate. \nThe Coolkit program seeks to activate micro-neighbourhoods where residents care the most and can take practical collective action on tree planting and stewardship\, in alignment with local policies and staff. The Coolkit is an attractive\, customizable DIY resource which provides fun ‘hands-on’ activities and low-barrier visual learning tools to build capacity and guide local climate action. It follows a simple five-step process\, which includes structured neighbourhood walks\, mapping local vulnerabilities & assets\, collective visioning of climate solutions on your block\, leading to practical local climate action plans. The webinar will explain how a series of workshops empowers residents to become local climate champions\, with municipal support\, for positive action such as tree planting\, rewilding and stewarding boulevards\, food forests\, raingardens etc. \nEvaluation results will be shared from testing of this process in diverse neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver and other Canadian communities\, where it has been well received by residents of many cultures and all age groups\, including disadvantaged communities in low-canopy neighbourhoods. \nThe webinar discusses how such programs can be scaled and customized by other municipalities to help meet high-level targets on the ground and implemented through new professional development opportunities such as a train-the-trainer Micro-certificate in Climate Action and Community Engagement and online degree programs such as UBC’s Master of Urban Forestry Leadership. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn new tools for engaging local communities on private land tree-planting and stewardship\nExplore replicable processes & best practices for empowering collective climate action at neighbourhood scale\nLearn about new training pathways for building confidence\, capacity\, and credentials in engaging your community\n\nSpeakers for this event are: \n\nDr. Stephen R.J Sheppard\, Emeritus Professor\, UBC Faculty of Forestry & Director of the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP)\nDr. Sara Barron\, Program Director for Masters of Urban Forestry Leadership and Bachelor of Urban Forestry\, UBC.\nElisa Kwun\, Graduate Student and MUFL Coordinator\, UBC\n\nISA CEUs have been applied for and are pending. \nRegister Today!
