SUMMARY:Treesilience: Cultivating Safe Trees\, Equitable Canopies\, and Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series Webinar. Thank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for their support of the entire Learning Series! \nDead or dying trees don’t just create safety hazards—they also threaten public trust in the value of urban trees and the long-term health of our city canopies. When a tree looms as a danger to a home or power line\, it’s hard to see it as an asset. And for many residents—especially in historically marginalized communities—the cost of pruning or removing hazardous trees is out of reach\, leaving property owners\, neighborhoods\, and city departments stuck between risk and limited resources. \nThat’s where Treesilience comes in. \nLaunched in 2020 by The Nature Conservancy and the USDA Forest Service\, Treesilience is a growing national initiative helping communities remove hazardous trees\, maintain mature canopy\, and plant for the future—with a strong focus on equity. The program prioritizes historically underserved neighborhoods\, where tree canopy is most threatened and where residents stand to gain the most from healthier urban forests. \nFor community and urban foresters\, this webinar offers an opportunity to connect with a replicable model that: \n\nsupports private property owners with the cost of tree care\,\nreduces risks before they become emergencies\,\nstrengthens public trust in urban forestry programs\, and\nbuilds local capacity through community partnerships and workforce development\n\nToday\, Treesilience programs are active in eight U.S. cities\, each shaped by local needs and partnerships. In this Learning Series webinar\, you’ll hear directly how they are scaling impact and building long-term canopy resilience through creative\, community-driven approaches: \n\nChicago\, IL – Urban forestry workforce development\nKansas City\, MO – City/state/nonprofit collaborative emerald ash borer response\nBaton Rouge\, LA – Partnerships restoring trees in parks and public spaces\nSt. Louis\, MO – Empowering tree advocates and creating a private property tree care toolkit\n\nThis webinar will share actionable ideas\, proven strategies\, and inspiration for everyone working in urban forestry. Join us to learn how Treesilience programs are transforming urgent tree care needs into opportunities for equity\, safety\, and long-term resilience in communities across the country. \nLearning Objectives \nAt the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify strategies to support private property tree care and complement municipal efforts with cost-sharing\, community engagement\, and workforce development.\nEmpower community members to lead urban forestry initiatives\, identifying dead or high-risk trees and opportunities for planting new trees.\nImplement collaborative\, equity-focused plans to address hazardous trees and protect tree canopy on private property.\n\nISA CEUs are applied for and pending. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Urban Foresters as Change-Makers: Sparking Transformational Change in our Communities
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series Webinar! \nThank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for their support of the UCFS Learning Series \nEvery movement starts with a single spark—but real change happens when that spark ignites a collective force. Inspired by Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point\, this session will empower urban foresters to become change-makers and catalysts for transformation. \nUrban forestry demands a diverse skill set. One day\, you’re in the field caring for trees; the next\, you’re collaborating with government officials\, meeting with constituents\, or tackling a mountain of spreadsheets. These competing responsibilities can make it difficult to fully engage with the community\, sometimes causing projects to flounder or programs to stagnate. Yet\, it’s often the voices of constituents and grassroots advocacy that can create real progress. \nYour vision\, voice and leadership can be the tipping point that shifts mindsets\, mobilizes action\, and strengthens our communities as well as our urban forestry programs. By integrating service leadership into your daily tasks\, you can amplify the “power of many” and drive meaningful change. Active listening\, creative education\, and adaptive management are key tools in turning public support into momentum for change. Simply embracing your natural and learned leadership skills can be the missing ingredient that helps overcome challenges and advances urban forestry initiatives. \nWhether you’re advocating for policy change\, leading a volunteer program\, or simply inspiring your neighbors\, this session will equip you with the tools to turn ideas into action. Through real-world strategies and best practices\, you’ll discover how to: \n\nRecognize your unique role in leading and advancing change.\nEngage your community through inclusive and participatory planning.\nMobilize the “power of many” to amplify impact and drive action.\n\nIf you’re passionate about sustainability and want to make a real lasting difference\, this session will equip you with the strategies\, confidence\, and leadership skills to step up\, inspire\, and create change. The future of urban forestry depends on leaders like you! \nISA CEUs applied for and pending. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Urban Forest Strike Team: Supporting Communities through Storm Recovery
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series webinar!\n\nAcross the nation\, urban and community foresters are grappling with the devastating impacts of natural disasters and the aftermath of recovery. Additionally\, many of our most underserved communities lack the expertise and resources needed to assess and manage storm-damaged trees—essential elements for a healthy and resilient community. \nThe Illinois Urban Forest Strike Team (UFST) was born from the need to address this challenge. A collaborative effort between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program and the USDA Forest Service\, UFST was created following a series of devastating hurricanes in 2007. Its mission is to assist communities by enhancing public safety\, accelerating recovery\, minimizing urban tree canopy loss\, and helping document disaster recovery needs for potential FEMA reimbursement. \nThis initiative trains\, recruits\, and deploys certified Urban Foresters and Arborists to assess storm-damaged trees using industry-leading arboriculture and FEMA standards. By deploying skilled arborists and passionate volunteers\, the team plays a pivotal role in sustainable disaster recovery. They use advanced tree risk assessment protocols and GIS technology to inventory publicly owned trees—identifying those that need mitigation while preserving those that can thrive. These efforts help communities recover faster\, fostering stronger\, more resilient urban ecosystems. \nMore than just rebuilding\, the Strike Team’s work nurtures the long-term health of our environment\, strengthens social bonds\, and contributes to the fight against climate change. Join this Learning Series session to learn how to launch this powerful initiative in your own community. Together\, we can restore valuable community trees\, enhance public health\, and create thriving\, resilient communities in the face of future challenges. Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of this exciting\, mission-driven movement! \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nBuild the foundational elements of establishing an volunteer Strike Team.\nConduct and manage volunteer lead rapid tree risk assessments to support post-storm recovery efforts.\nLead an Urban Forest Strike Team initiative in your own community\, building local resilience and protecting urban and community trees.\n\nISA CEUs will be applied for. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Roots of Resilience: 20 Years of Transforming EAB Challenges into Successful Urban Forest Management
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a UCFS Learning Series! This Learning Series event is hosted in collaboration with the American Public Works Association. \nFree for UCFS Members; $20 for non-members \nEmerald Ash Borer (EAB) has proven to be one of the most destructive invasive species to ever hit North American forests. Exactly 20 years after its first detection in the East Coast and Midwest of the U.S. and Canada EAB reached the Western regions in 2022. Despite decades of monitoring\, treatment and extensive tree removals\, EAB continues to spread west\, while other threats like the Invasive Shot Hole Borer (ISHB) have been found creeping north from southern California.  \nIn this exclusive UCFS Learning Series\, we will delve into the hard-earned wisdom from the front lines of EAB response and hear directly from experts and practitioners who have been managing EAB infestations since the early days of its detection. Whether you’re new or a seasoned veteran of EAB and other invasive pests\, this session will equip you with proven strategies for engaging political stakeholders\, crafting ordinances to protect trees on private property\, and spearheading successful community outreach and education efforts. You’ll come away with key takeaways for detecting\, treating\, and managing pest outbreaks\, and learn what these experts wish they had done from the beginning to prevent the spread.  \nJoin us for this unique opportunity to gain insights and inspiration from those who have faced the challenges of EAB head-on for the knowledge you need to manage the invasive pests in your urban and community forests.   \n Learning Objectives  \nParticipants will be able to:  \n\nImplement the strategies for detecting\, treating\, and managing EAB and invasive pest outbreaks. \n\n\nDevelop local bylaws and ordinances to protect private property trees from invasive pest outbreaks. \n\n\nEmploy successful strategies to engage and educate local communities\, governments\, and other stakeholders in rallying support and resources to manage invasive pest outbreaks. \n\nSpeakers: \n\nAnthony Daniel\, Biologist and Urban Forester\, City of Montreal\, Canada\nPhilip Potyondy\, Sustainable Forestry Coordinator\, Minneapolis Parks and Recreation\nDr. Fredric Miller\, Illinois Forest Health Specialist\, State of Illinois\nShane McQuillan\, City Forester\, City of Des Moines and APWA Facilities and Grounds Committee Co-Chair\n\nApproved for one (1) ISA CEU. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Is Your Tree Protection Ordinance Constitutional?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the UCFS Learning Series! \nIn modern times\, tree protection laws and ordinances of all different kinds are found in many jurisdictions. But if a law or ordinance conflicts with the fundamental rules of a state or federal constitution\, then the law is invalid to the extent of conflict. This presentation discusses a sampling of the constitutional challenges that have tested various tree protection laws in the U.S. courts\, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Topics include takings\, substantive and procedural due process\, equal protection\, excessive fines\, search and seizure\, and even freedom of speech rights. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify eight different arguments challenging the constitutionality of a tree ordinance and why each was successful or unsuccessful\nExplain the difference between a constitutional and unconstitutional exaction\nExplain the level of deference courts give a municipality’s ordinance under a “police power” challenge\n\nApproved for one ISA CEU. \nRegister Today!
