SUMMARY:UWN Partner Event: The Harrisonburg Urban Wood Partnership
DESCRIPTION:This event is being posted on behalf of UCFS’s partner the Urban Wood Network (UWN). \nWhat: Municipal urban wood programs are a cornerstone of the urban wood industry. Across the country\, cities have built partnerships with local urban wood processors. At this educational webinar\, audience members will learn about Harrisonburg\, Virginia urban wood projects and collaborations with Rocktown Urban Wood. \nProgram Description: \nThe Harrisonburg Urban Wood Program works to reclaim wood from trees that are removed in the city—whether due to storms\, disease\, or development—and redirects that material away from waste streams. Instead of ending up as mulch or landfill\, the wood gets a second life. \nThat’s where Rocktown Urban Wood comes in as a key partner. They take that salvaged wood and transform it into usable products—furniture\, lumber\, and custom pieces—while also supporting local craftsmanship and small-scale manufacturing. \nTogether\, the partnership does a few important things: \n\nReduces waste by repurposing urban trees\nSupports the local economy through skilled labor and woodworking\nPreserves local character by keeping materials tied to the community\nPromotes sustainability in a very visible\, tangible way\n\nHarrisonburg has strong community buy-in and valuable public-private partnerships for this program. \nRSVP here

SUMMARY:From Crisis to Canopy: Lessons from Cedar Rapids’ Derecho Storm Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to Bartlett Tree Experts – our Exclusive Learning Series Partner! \nFrom Crisis to Canopy: Lessons from Cedar Rapids’ Derecho Storm Recovery \nIn August 2020\, a powerful derecho—one of the most destructive windstorms in U.S. history—swept across Iowa and the Midwest\, leaving widespread devastation in its wake. Cedar Rapids\, located in eastern Iowa\, was hardest hit. In a matter of hours\, the city lost more than 650\,000 trees\, 65% of its canopy; and saw neighborhoods\, homes\, and public infrastructure suffer catastrophic damage. \nFrom Crisis to Canopy explores how Cedar Rapids transformed an unprecedented disaster into a model for long-term urban forest recovery. This session reviews the City’s immediate response and the development of ReLeaf Cedar Rapids\, a bold 10-year plan to restore the urban tree canopy. Designed as a coordinated\, data-driven roadmap\, ReLeaf Cedar Rapids prioritizes equitable replanting\, guides species selection\, and aligns public and private property efforts to ensure sustained canopy restoration across the city. \nIn this webinar you’ll discover how strategic preparation\, strong partnerships\, and a commitment to community-driven planning fueled one of the most ambitious urban forestry recovery efforts in the Midwest. Join us to learn what it takes to rebuild after large-scale canopy loss—and what you can do now to prepare your city for the next major storm. \nThis webinar is approved for one ISA CEU. \nThis webinar meets Domain 1 for ISA CUFP and Standard 3 for UCFS Accreditation. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Treesilience: Cultivating Safe Trees\, Equitable Canopies\, and Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series Webinar. Thank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for their support of the entire Learning Series! \nDead or dying trees don’t just create safety hazards—they also threaten public trust in the value of urban trees and the long-term health of our city canopies. When a tree looms as a danger to a home or power line\, it’s hard to see it as an asset. And for many residents—especially in historically marginalized communities—the cost of pruning or removing hazardous trees is out of reach\, leaving property owners\, neighborhoods\, and city departments stuck between risk and limited resources. \nThat’s where Treesilience comes in. \nLaunched in 2020 by The Nature Conservancy and the USDA Forest Service\, Treesilience is a growing national initiative helping communities remove hazardous trees\, maintain mature canopy\, and plant for the future—with a strong focus on equity. The program prioritizes historically underserved neighborhoods\, where tree canopy is most threatened and where residents stand to gain the most from healthier urban forests. \nFor community and urban foresters\, this webinar offers an opportunity to connect with a replicable model that: \n\nsupports private property owners with the cost of tree care\,\nreduces risks before they become emergencies\,\nstrengthens public trust in urban forestry programs\, and\nbuilds local capacity through community partnerships and workforce development\n\nToday\, Treesilience programs are active in eight U.S. cities\, each shaped by local needs and partnerships. In this Learning Series webinar\, you’ll hear directly how they are scaling impact and building long-term canopy resilience through creative\, community-driven approaches: \n\nChicago\, IL – Urban forestry workforce development\nKansas City\, MO – City/state/nonprofit collaborative emerald ash borer response\nBaton Rouge\, LA – Partnerships restoring trees in parks and public spaces\nSt. Louis\, MO – Empowering tree advocates and creating a private property tree care toolkit\n\nThis webinar will share actionable ideas\, proven strategies\, and inspiration for everyone working in urban forestry. Join us to learn how Treesilience programs are transforming urgent tree care needs into opportunities for equity\, safety\, and long-term resilience in communities across the country. \nLearning Objectives \nAt the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify strategies to support private property tree care and complement municipal efforts with cost-sharing\, community engagement\, and workforce development.\nEmpower community members to lead urban forestry initiatives\, identifying dead or high-risk trees and opportunities for planting new trees.\nImplement collaborative\, equity-focused plans to address hazardous trees and protect tree canopy on private property.\n\nISA CEUs are applied for and pending. \nRegister today!

DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series Webinar! \nThank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for their support of the UCFS Learning Series \nEvery movement starts with a single spark—but real change happens when that spark ignites a collective force. Inspired by Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point\, this session will empower urban foresters to become change-makers and catalysts for transformation. \nUrban forestry demands a diverse skill set. One day\, you’re in the field caring for trees; the next\, you’re collaborating with government officials\, meeting with constituents\, or tackling a mountain of spreadsheets. These competing responsibilities can make it difficult to fully engage with the community\, sometimes causing projects to flounder or programs to stagnate. Yet\, it’s often the voices of constituents and grassroots advocacy that can create real progress. \nYour vision\, voice and leadership can be the tipping point that shifts mindsets\, mobilizes action\, and strengthens our communities as well as our urban forestry programs. By integrating service leadership into your daily tasks\, you can amplify the “power of many” and drive meaningful change. Active listening\, creative education\, and adaptive management are key tools in turning public support into momentum for change. Simply embracing your natural and learned leadership skills can be the missing ingredient that helps overcome challenges and advances urban forestry initiatives. \nWhether you’re advocating for policy change\, leading a volunteer program\, or simply inspiring your neighbors\, this session will equip you with the tools to turn ideas into action. Through real-world strategies and best practices\, you’ll discover how to: \n\nRecognize your unique role in leading and advancing change.\nEngage your community through inclusive and participatory planning.\nMobilize the “power of many” to amplify impact and drive action.\n\nIf you’re passionate about sustainability and want to make a real lasting difference\, this session will equip you with the strategies\, confidence\, and leadership skills to step up\, inspire\, and create change. SUMMARY:Urban Forest Strike Team: Supporting Communities through Storm Recovery
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series webinar!\n\nAcross the nation\, urban and community foresters are grappling with the devastating impacts of natural disasters and the aftermath of recovery. Additionally\, many of our most underserved communities lack the expertise and resources needed to assess and manage storm-damaged trees—essential elements for a healthy and resilient community. \nThe Illinois Urban Forest Strike Team (UFST) was born from the need to address this challenge. A collaborative effort between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program and the USDA Forest Service\, UFST was created following a series of devastating hurricanes in 2007. Its mission is to assist communities by enhancing public safety\, accelerating recovery\, minimizing urban tree canopy loss\, and helping document disaster recovery needs for potential FEMA reimbursement. \nThis initiative trains\, recruits\, and deploys certified Urban Foresters and Arborists to assess storm-damaged trees using industry-leading arboriculture and FEMA standards. By deploying skilled arborists and passionate volunteers\, the team plays a pivotal role in sustainable disaster recovery. They use advanced tree risk assessment protocols and GIS technology to inventory publicly owned trees—identifying those that need mitigation while preserving those that can thrive. These efforts help communities recover faster\, fostering stronger\, more resilient urban ecosystems. \nMore than just rebuilding\, the Strike Team’s work nurtures the long-term health of our environment\, strengthens social bonds\, and contributes to the fight against climate change. Join this Learning Series session to learn how to launch this powerful initiative in your own community. Together\, we can restore valuable community trees\, enhance public health\, and create thriving\, resilient communities in the face of future challenges. Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of this exciting\, mission-driven movement! \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nBuild the foundational elements of establishing an volunteer Strike Team.\nConduct and manage volunteer lead rapid tree risk assessments to support post-storm recovery efforts.\nLead an Urban Forest Strike Team initiative in your own community\, building local resilience and protecting urban and community trees.\n\nISA CEUs will be applied for. \nRegister today!
