SUMMARY:UWN Partner Event: The Harrisonburg Urban Wood Partnership
DESCRIPTION:This event is being posted on behalf of UCFS’s partner the Urban Wood Network (UWN). \nWhat: Municipal urban wood programs are a cornerstone of the urban wood industry. Across the country\, cities have built partnerships with local urban wood processors. At this educational webinar\, audience members will learn about Harrisonburg\, Virginia urban wood projects and collaborations with Rocktown Urban Wood. \nProgram Description: \nThe Harrisonburg Urban Wood Program works to reclaim wood from trees that are removed in the city—whether due to storms\, disease\, or development—and redirects that material away from waste streams. Instead of ending up as mulch or landfill\, the wood gets a second life. \nThat’s where Rocktown Urban Wood comes in as a key partner. They take that salvaged wood and transform it into usable products—furniture\, lumber\, and custom pieces—while also supporting local craftsmanship and small-scale manufacturing. \nTogether\, the partnership does a few important things: \n\nReduces waste by repurposing urban trees\nSupports the local economy through skilled labor and woodworking\nPreserves local character by keeping materials tied to the community\nPromotes sustainability in a very visible\, tangible way\n\nHarrisonburg has strong community buy-in and valuable public-private partnerships for this program. \nRSVP here

DESCRIPTION:Thanks to Bartlett Tree Experts – our Exclusive Learning Series Partner! \nFrom Crisis to Canopy: Lessons from Cedar Rapids’ Derecho Storm Recovery \nIn August 2020\, a powerful derecho—one of the most destructive windstorms in U.S. history—swept across Iowa and the Midwest\, leaving widespread devastation in its wake. Cedar Rapids\, located in eastern Iowa\, was hardest hit. In a matter of hours\, the city lost more than 650\,000 trees\, 65% of its canopy; and saw neighborhoods\, homes\, and public infrastructure suffer catastrophic damage. \nFrom Crisis to Canopy explores how Cedar Rapids transformed an unprecedented disaster into a model for long-term urban forest recovery. This session reviews the City’s immediate response and the development of ReLeaf Cedar Rapids\, a bold 10-year plan to restore the urban tree canopy. Designed as a coordinated\, data-driven roadmap\, ReLeaf Cedar Rapids prioritizes equitable replanting\, guides species selection\, and aligns public and private property efforts to ensure sustained canopy restoration across the city. \nIn this webinar you’ll discover how strategic preparation\, strong partnerships\, and a commitment to community-driven planning fueled one of the most ambitious urban forestry recovery efforts in the Midwest. SUMMARY:Treesilience: Cultivating Safe Trees\, Equitable Canopies\, and Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:A UCFS Learning Series Webinar. Thank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for their support of the entire Learning Series! \nDead or dying trees don’t just create safety hazards—they also threaten public trust in the value of urban trees and the long-term health of our city canopies. When a tree looms as a danger to a home or power line\, it’s hard to see it as an asset. And for many residents—especially in historically marginalized communities—the cost of pruning or removing hazardous trees is out of reach\, leaving property owners\, neighborhoods\, and city departments stuck between risk and limited resources. \nThat’s where Treesilience comes in. \nLaunched in 2020 by The Nature Conservancy and the USDA Forest Service\, Treesilience is a growing national initiative helping communities remove hazardous trees\, maintain mature canopy\, and plant for the future—with a strong focus on equity. The program prioritizes historically underserved neighborhoods\, where tree canopy is most threatened and where residents stand to gain the most from healthier urban forests. \nFor community and urban foresters\, this webinar offers an opportunity to connect with a replicable model that: \n\nsupports private property owners with the cost of tree care\,\nreduces risks before they become emergencies\,\nstrengthens public trust in urban forestry programs\, and\nbuilds local capacity through community partnerships and workforce development\n\nToday\, Treesilience programs are active in eight U.S. cities\, each shaped by local needs and partnerships. In this Learning Series webinar\, you’ll hear directly how they are scaling impact and building long-term canopy resilience through creative\, community-driven approaches: \n\nChicago\, IL – Urban forestry workforce development\nKansas City\, MO – City/state/nonprofit collaborative emerald ash borer response\nBaton Rouge\, LA – Partnerships restoring trees in parks and public spaces\nSt. Louis\, MO – Empowering tree advocates and creating a private property tree care toolkit\n\nThis webinar will share actionable ideas\, proven strategies\, and inspiration for everyone working in urban forestry. Join us to learn how Treesilience programs are transforming urgent tree care needs into opportunities for equity\, safety\, and long-term resilience in communities across the country. \nLearning Objectives \nAt the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify strategies to support private property tree care and complement municipal efforts with cost-sharing\, community engagement\, and workforce development.\nEmpower community members to lead urban forestry initiatives\, identifying dead or high-risk trees and opportunities for planting new trees.\nImplement collaborative\, equity-focused plans to address hazardous trees and protect tree canopy on private property.\n\nISA CEUs are applied for and pending. \nRegister today!
